Best breakfasts to have before training

Now are you a breakfast as soon as you wake up kinda person? Or someone who has to wait a few hours before food can pass your lips? Whether you eat before your morning workout can depend on quite a few things - the type of training you’re going to do, your goals, the duration of your workout and your own health. But after you wake up your blood sugars tend to be quite low, so you might feel a bit sluggish and tired - which is why we’d recommend having a little somethin’ somethin’ before you start moving around - especially if you are going to be strength training.

Carbohydrates, like those found in fruits, vegetables and grains, are the primary fuel source to power you through a short or low-intensity workout, however if you’re doing a longer or more intense workout which includes strength training, you should have a good mix of energy-boosting carbohydrates alongside a small amount of fat and protein.

So here are five quick and easy breakfast staples to help you get energised in the mornings:

YOGHURT - Yoghurt is great option for an easily digestible to fuel your body with carbs and protein pre-workout. If you prefer to buy unsweetened, you can add some honey or fresh berries to give it some sweetness.

HARD BOILED EGGS - Hard-boiled eggs are a nice way to get a protein hit before a workout—not to mention, they’re convenient and mild enough for the early hours. Add a side of sugary fruit, like grapes, or a banana, for some fast-acting energy if you are more on the hungry side.

PORRIDGE - Porridge is a go-to option for many morning gym goers. This classic combo is packed with complex carbs and protein. Whether you prefer instant packets or overnight oats, you can go plain or quickly add some flavour with some honey or maple syrup (vegan friendly sweetener), seeds, nuts, or berries.

PEANUT BUTTER ON TOAST - Have a slice of whole wheat bread with a spoonful of peanut or almond butter for an excellent combination of both carbs and protein before your workout. To make even tastier add some sliced banana on top of your nut butter.

PROTEIN BAR - If you typically roll out of bed and head straight to the gym, a protein bar is a quick and easy option to have on the go. Whether you make them yourself at home or opt for a pre-made one, they are packed with nutrients and rich in protein, a great pick before weight-training.
