Three reasons to get involved with Second Hand September.

Oxfam is celebrating its third Second Hand September event - a campaign to encourage people to buy only second-hand items for 30 days in September.

They're encouraging everyone to get involved by either buying second-hand or refraining from buying at all for 30 days and we’ve decided to get involved too at the studio - encouraging our members to bring in their pre loved gym-wear to raise money for Oxfam!

It's clear from the weather we've had in the last month - torrential rain to 40-degree heat - Climate change is impossible to ignore. And while you might think, 'oh, I'm not going to be able to make a difference,' you are WRONG. Because every little helps.

Did you know when a new pair of jeans are made, approx. 16.2kg of CO2 is emitted – the equivalent of driving over 58 miles in a car?!

So, if we start to buy, wear and donate more second-hand clothes - we can hopefully reduce the demand for new clothes and, in turn, help our beautiful planet!

Here are three reasons for you to get involved:

  1. You're doing your bit! Have a clear out of clothes and donate them to Oxfam! It's never been easier - you can request a donate by-post bag for FREE! If you haven't worn it in the last three years (we're being generous because everyone probably wore sweatpants in 2020/2021), it's time to GET RID!

  2. You can get creative and have fun! Make a day of it with some pals. Hit StrongHer up for a Saturday morning workout, head for brunch, and then mooch around some charity shops to find absolute bargains and gems you would NOT be able to get on the high street.

  3. It's time to get serious with this sh*t. Fast fashion is not the one anymore. It's time to make a stand and do what is in your control to make a difference. Three hundred fifty thousand tonnes, that's around £140 million worth of used, but still, wearable clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year.

What StrongHer is doing to make a difference:

  • Thanks to a fantastic suggestion from one of our members earlier this year, we brought Second Hand September into the studio at StrongHer and have encouraged all of our members to bring in their unwanted gym kit so it can go to a new home! What isn't sold in September will be donated to our local Oxfam!

  • We're also now partnered with a fabulous brand Gym+Coffee - which is already Carbon Neutral and is moving towards B-Corp status.

  • The StrongHer merchandise we sell in studio is printed and ordered on demand, making sure that we don’t have excess stock and only order what is needed.
