Why having a programme will make or break your fitness journey
According to a 2019 survey by Her Campus, 67% of women reported quitting the gym within the first 3-6 months because they weren’t sure what exercises to do or how to use the equipment. When you think about it … that’s a bit much. That’s nearly ⅔ of the female population that at some point decided they wanted to better themselves and make a lifestyle change. And nearly ⅔ of them quit after 3-6 months.
But wait, there’s more to it. Another study (Journal of Physical Activity and Health, 2015) found that 40% of women drop out because they don't know how to structure their workouts effectively. Given this - the next statistic is not surprising - 43% of women get frustrated with not seeing results, which causes them to lose motivation and quit (Club Industry, 2020).
We’re not surprised by these numbers - we’ve seen it over and over again over the years of running a women-only strength training space. But what have we learned from these stats?
Women want results
Whether you have joined the gym to lose fat, improve your mental health or deadlift twice your body weight - it doesn’t really matter. The common denominator is that you you are making an investment in the present (in the form of money, time, and sweat) to reap rewards in the future (lose the fat, feel better mentally, become strong af). Whatever the results you are after - it’s the results that matter to you. So when you’re making all of these investments in the present without reaping any rewards in the future - well, it makes sense why 67% of women quit after a couple of months.
There’s a lot of confusion about what drives results
Why would you not get the results you are after though?? Put simply, you probably haven’t got a clue what you’re doing (don’t shoot the messenger!). And we can’t blame ya - with so much nonsense out there, especially on socials, it’s so easy to get confused! So if you’re doing endless HIIT in the gym to lose fat and look more toned - well, that won’t do it. HIIT is not the right tool for fat loss. It’s an incredible tool for conditioning. And if you want to become strong af but you’re lifting 5kg dumbbells - well, that won’t do it either! Light weights are not the right tool for building strength. They are an incredible tool for rehab. You get where we are going with this! So while you might eventually figure it out…
Winging it on your own either fails, or makes getting results frustrating and lonnnnng
Think about it this way - you are the owner of a small company and you need to file your tax reports to HMRC. You speak to your accountant, they deal with the company’s books and file the tax report on your behalf. Job done. Okay but you could, in theory, learn how to do this on your own, right? So why pay someone to do it for you? Expertise. So the job gets done fast - and it gets done right.
Same goes with fitness! In fact, according to a Club Industry report, 65% of women who worked with personal trainers and coaches reported seeing more noticeable results in less time compared to those who didn’t. The secret ingredient - working with the right tools, having a structured programme, accountability, and being consistent.
