5 things you need to consider before you sign up for a Hyrox comp

You lot loved Izzy’s Hyrox story last week - and we get it, the energy is contagious! If you’ve found yourself playing around with the idea of signing up for the next race, this blog is for you. Today we’ll look at top things to consider before you press ‘Find your race’ and start training for the trendiest fitness comp out there.

It’s 50% running

Yep, that’s right. 50% of your stations, and likely more than 50% of the race time - you’ll spend running. So you cannot skip on the training. And more importantly, Hyrox runs are not your walk in the park - the 8k you have to complete is compromised running. What that means is that you are already fatigued - by doing something else, like a heavy sled push, or sandbag walking lunges. And compromised running requires specific training!

FFS wear a proper running bra!

We get it, we love a good outfit (especially a matching one for those Hyrox doubles!) for a comp. But if you’re going for fashion over function… you’re going to pay for it! Fear not - read our blog post on how to go about choosing the right sports bra.

Brick workouts are your new best friend

Brick what?! A brick workout is basically a workout that combines two or more disciplines. These are triathlon-specific workouts, and they help the athlete prepare for the transition from one discipline to another (e.g. cycling to running). Hyrox comes with running, rowing, pushing, pulling, skiing … you name it. The more you practice here, the more used you’ll become to transitioning from running to the station-specific work - which you have to do 8 times during the race!

Enjoy the process

Hyrox prep could be lots of fun - the variety of fitness training means that you’ll be doing loads of different workouts, and no two workouts will feel the same. How could one get bored?

It’s meant to be fun

If you’re planning on doing doubles or relay - the first thing you need to do is make sure that all athletes are on the same page about the WHY. If your mentality is ‘woohoo this is so much fun!’ and your partner is ‘I want to win at ANY cost’ type of person, it could make for a miserable experience. Hyrox will undoubtedly challenge you - physically and mentally - so you have to make sure you’re enjoying the process, both preparing and actually doing the race. And if you find yourself actually loving it - there’s always Hyrox Pro for the competitive spirits out there!
