Be brave enough to suck at something new

The year is 2016, two PTs are having a chat over a glass of prosecco. They are talking about the fitness industry and how women fit (...or don’t) in it. They both agree it’s tough - either ridiculous crash diets, obscene amounts of cardio, or even worse - both. Weights, strength or proper nutrition are niche. The industry caters only to the slender, fit white woman.

These two PTs were Tig and Sam, and they wanted to do things differently, to make an impact. They believed that no matter who you are, where you come from, what size, shape or color you are - you deserve to feel confident and take up space in the gym.

So, they came up with a plan. Held the first StrongHer workshop. The demand was so overwhelming they created a small group training program - Warrior project. For a couple of years, Sam, Tig and a small team delivered it in commercial gyms across London until they found a permanent home in Bethnal Green.

In 2020, StrongHer as we know it today was born. We pivoted online through lockdown, trained you virtually in gardens, on balconies and in living rooms. Then when we were allowed back in the studio it was game on! And the rest, as they say, is history.

Since then, we, StrongHer, have had many exciting wins, made lots of mistakes, and learned a LOT. While a lot of our work is focused on helping newbies get to grips with strength training, we wanted to take you on a trip down memory lane and share a bit about the time when we were all beginners, too. Remember that workshop we mentioned? Yep, that was StrongHer’s first strength training class … and we didn’t lift any weights. Talk about messing up royally. Instead, we did a mix of bodyweight, dance fitness and HIIT. And only talked about strength training and nutrition. We know, we’re still in shock too. Point being, trying new things is difficult, and intimidating, and it’s okay to get it wrong. But we learn. And we grow. And get better. And before we know it, we excel. We become strongher.

It’s THREE years since we opened The StrongHer Space this August, and it’s kind of a big deal for us - Sam, Tig and the StrongHer team. But none of these three years would’ve been possible without YOU, the StrongHERD.

P.S Our birthday wish is that no woman is ever too scared of being a beginner; StrongHERD, be brave enough to suck at something new!
