How strength training can help you in every walk in life

We’ve always been very loud about the strength training that goes on at StrongHer - we’re not afraid to make some noise, take up space space, lift heavy (really heavy) sh*t and tell everyone about it!

And while we genuinely enjoy making a big fuss about it, there’s a bigger, more serious reason why we want to get the memo to every single woman: strength training can help you in every part of your life - and we want to tell you why 👇👇

Functional fitness

While the term itself has been overhyped, the concept has been underappreciated. Functional fitness is all about building the strength & endurance to help with the physically demanding tasks your day-to-day life throws at you. Think carrying your heavy Tesco or Lidl bags home (Farmer’s carry anyone?). Or being able to put that heavy suitcase in the overhead space on your next budget flight without breaking a sweat (hello squat to overhead press?!?).  Or being able to run - and successfully catch the tube after a night out! If you have kids - it’s about being able to carry them around all day (well, maybe not all day) but to be able to do it without feeling too worn out. This IS functional fitness. It gives you independence & ensures that you can move through life injury-free!

Growing old gracefully

There’s no sugarcoating it, none of us are getting any younger (sob!). So the sooner you start doing something about your future body, the better! Maintaining muscle mass and bone density is especially important for women - peri-menopause and menopause directly affects it, and we are most at risk of developing osteoporosis. Strength training builds more than just muscles - it helps us maintain and even increase bone density. This is where fitness goes well beyond aesthetics and vanity goals (although there’s nothing really wrong with them either!) - it’s about maintaining your wellbeing and good quality of life as you age, and there’s arguably no better type of training than strength training when it comes to it. The beauty of it? It’s never too late to start!

Sports

How many marathon runners do you know of - who have injured themselves at some point during their training or race? Before we get cancelled for this - hear us out! Running a marathon is A LOT on your body, and we have so much respect for you marathon runners out there! But we do have a bone to pick with the marathon training plans - actually all running plans to be honest - they all involved running, and running only. The missing ingredient is of course strength training! A session a week to strengthen those joints, tendons and ligaments under load is all it takes, and it’s something we incorporate in our weekly running club on a Monday evening with Max.

But strength training doesn’t aid running only - having strong muscles and bones is fundamental to all sports (except chess maybe? This one is up for debate!) and fitness activities. Do you love climbing? Get a few back sessions in! Ice skating? Let’s get those quads and glutes on fire! You’re a tennis girlie? A good shoulder press & some forearm work will do wonders!

So whether you’re ready to start a new sport or take up a new hobby, maybe think about adding in one or two strength sessions a week to help support and strengthen your body, inside and out!

We’re going to be announcing an exclusive offer for the Olympics - make sure you’re on our email list to get the details first!
